Communication

TWITTER
Twitter is a social networking site that allows you to publish short, sentence-long updates - called "tweets" - about what you are doing right now (for example, "Mary is at the store," "John is reading a book." Twitter allows followers of your page to stay updated on your current activities.

MYSPACE
MySpace is a social networking utility that allows you to create a personalized profile. Many musicians, authors and other artists use MySpace to make their music accessible to a larger audience. MySpace also has a special networking feature: by selecting your field, subfield and speciality, you can locate and network other MySpace members who are involved in similar work. You will find an example of ArtSpace's MySpace page on the right-hand column under the "Links" portion.

FACEBOOK
Facebook, like MySpace, is a social networking utility. Unlike MySpace, in which all profiles are viewable by all members unless you change privacy settings, Facebook requires that members join a network - this may be a city, your company's network, or the college/university you attended. Joining a network allows you to view all profiles of other members in that network. Facebook also has a feature called a "fan page" - an informative page about a public figure, organization or cause. Facebook also allows users to create events that other users can be invited to. You will find an example of ArtSpace's Facebook page on the right-hand column under the "Links" portion.

A blog can be about anything - your creative writing, your dog, your vacations, you opinions, or it can be modified by large groups of people (the ArtSpace blogs are an example of blogs that have many authors). PowerPoint

PowerPoint is a program by Microsoft that can be used by either Macs or PCs. PowerPoint allows you to create interactive slideshows through an easy-to-use interface. A blank slide can have any number of things added to it: text, color, images, sounds, moving objects. There are also ways to set "triggers" - perhaps when you click to move to the next slide, a chime sounds, or maybe the screen fades to black, or even an a object may fly on screen! PowerPoint is used very widely in schools and universities to create exciting, interactive lectures.

YOUTUBE
YouTube is a website that allows users to upload videos of just about anything - music videos, tutorials, messages, political speeches, television programs. Users create a profile called a "channel" that can be specifically designed to fit a particular field (music videos, for example, would be found on channels in the "music" field). Users are able to comment on and rate the videos of other users. You also have the ability to track your channel's statistics, such as how many people have viewed your channel, which videos they have watched most often and where in the world there are people watching.

You can then search your albums by simply entering a tag word and the specific pictures are brought up. Picasa also gives you the ability to edit your photos right on the internet rather than through a separate program.

Music Technology

GARAGEBAND
GarageBand is a music software program found on all Mac computers. It allows users to create their own music either by recording live music with their computer's microphone, connecting a MIDI device (like a keyboard) or by utilizing GarageBand's loops feature. The loops feature contains thousands of short musical passages that can be repeated over and over (looped) to build a song. Loops may be musical or percussive and can be searched by key, meter and style. GarageBand also allows the music you've created to be exported to iTunes, making it into an MP3 that can be shared with anyone who has a computer (even if they don't have GarageBand or iTunes).

Audacity allows you to "fine tune" sound and music files to your liking and can also export files to iTunes. If coupled with GarageBand, you can create your own songs then spice them up any way you like.
